Course Objectives: To provide training in accordance with the requirements of The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (as applied to Power Presses).

Course Specification:

  • The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (as applied to Power Presses) content applicable to the safe use of power presses and press brakes
  • Relevant sections of: – The Health and Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974 and Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Power Press Mechanisms in detail related to your press types including what all the visual and audible indicators are that a safety critical component part of the press could imminently “fail to danger”.
  • Guards and Protection Devices: types and function, methods of installing, inspecting and testing including detection of defects. Guard design for ease of production and toolsetting. BS13857 – 2008 the minimum distances for guards away from traps. HSG 180 the application of photoelectric sensing devices
  • Press maintenance with regard to safety and economic and efficient production
  • HSG 236 Power Presses: Maintenance and Thorough Examination
  • Safe methods of work, toolsetting for safety and efficient production. The mechanics and methods of tool clamping

14:15  Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 – particularly employees and managers and supervisors' legal obligations. The management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 – particularly Regulation 13 – Capabilities and Training, Regulation 14 – Employees' Duties

09:00  Power Press Mechanisms with particular reference to their bearing on safety. Nature and function of clutch mechanisms, fly wheels, brakes and ancillary equipment. Recognition of symptoms of disorder.

10:45  Safety Devices – types and function of each type; methods of installing, inspecting and testing including detection of defects. BS 13857: 2008 – Minimum distances for guards away from traps. BS 5304: 2014 – Guard Electrical Interlocking, Inch Devices and Automatic Guards.

13:30  Safety Devices – Guard design for ease of use when toolsetting and ease of production. HSG 180 the application of photoelectric sensing devices.
